Women's Basketball Falls at No. 25 Emory

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered a 74-50 loss to 25th-ranked Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

With the setback, the Spartans fell to 8-8 overall on the season. CWRU is now 3-2 in conference play, falling two games behind first-place Emory, which improved to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in league games. It was the Eagles' ninth-consecutive win.

Four Spartan players scored in double figures on Sunday, led by graduate student forward Melissa Heath, who came off the bench to score 12 points on a five-of-nine shooting effort. Heath also added five rebounds and two blocks in the game. Sophomore guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence scored 11 points, while both senior guard Kendall McConico and first-year guard/ forward Isabella Mills added 10 points apiece.

Early three pointers by Lawrence and McConico helped the Spartans take a 6-2 lead with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter. However, that would prove to be the largest lead of the day for the Spartans. After falling behind, a three-pointer shot by senior guard Alicia Marie Gonzales put the Spartans back ahead 10-9, but the Eagles would take a 20-16 advantage into the second quarter, and then open the frame on a 7-0 run to expand their lead to double digits.

CWRU trailed by 13, 40-27, at halftime, but Lawrence helped cut the lead back to 10, 44-34, with a three-pointer with 7:08 remaining in the third. The Spartans would be unable to trim the lead back to single digits though, and Emory went ahead 60-39 by the end of the third quarter. The final deficit of 24 points was the Eagles' largest lead of the game.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 32.0% overall and 35.3% from three point range.

The Spartans will look to rebound next weekend, wrapping up a four-game road stretch against Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts on Friday, January 31 at 6:00 p.m. and New York University in New York, New York on Sunday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m.
