Women's Soccer Falls to #3 WashU in Double Overtime

Box Score

Despite fighting hard for 105 minutes, the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell in double overtime to third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis 2-1 in a road University Athletic Association match. The loss drops the Spartans to 13-4-0 overall and 2-4 in the UAA, while the league leading Bears improve to 15-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the UAA.

After a goalless first half, sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn broke the deadlock with a penalty kick goal in the 52nd minute. The goal, Washburn's 14th this season, adds to the program single-season goals and points records she broke in the last match. She now has 33 points this season on 14 goals and five assists.

The Spartans could not hold onto the lead as a goal by sophomore midfielder Ariana Miles tied the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute.

Senior Lauren Unterborn registered seven saves in regulation and a season-high 10 saves in the match. Throughout the first overtime period, Unterborn and the Spartans' defense held strong despite the Bears recording seven shots in the period. However, sophomore midfielder Erin Flynn scored the "golden goal" in the 105th minute to give the Bears the victory.

Washburn and first-year midfielder Aniya Hartzler led the team with two shots, and they both contributed a shot on goal. First-year forward Maia Sethi and first-year midfielder Melina Peshoff each added a shot on goal as well.

The Spartans return home to DiSanto Field for their final match of the regular season on Saturday, November 9 against No. 23 Carnegie Mellon. Before the 1:00 p.m. kickoff, the team will honor its four senior players—Unterborn, forward Kimberly Chen, defender Mary Kate Ford, and midfielder Jennifer Markley—as well as senior student coach Isabel Kazour as part of "Senior Day."
