#10 Women's Soccer Loses Heart Breaker to NYU in Second Overtime

Box Score

The 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team lost a heart-breaking 1-0 double overtime match to New York University in the team's University Athletic Association opener in Riverdale, New York on Saturday evening.

The loss ends the Spartans' (9-1-0, 0-1-0 UAA) nine-match winning streak to open the season. The Violets improved to 8-2-0 and 1-0-0 in the UAA with the victory.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn made a couple of impressive stops to keep the Violets off the board at the end of the first half. Following an NYU corner kick, she saved two consecutive Violets' shots to end the half with three saves. Sophomore Kat Rebele, senior Mary Kate Ford, junior Bailey George, and freshman Laura Gorjanc started the match on the backline, combining with Unterborn to keep the Violets' scoreless in regulation and the first overtime period. For the match, Unterborn collected five saves.

The Violets scored the lone goal in the 103rd minute on a penalty kick.

Offensively, senior Kimberly Chen led the team with three shots and freshman Merry Meyer led the Spartans with two shots on goal. Sophomore Anika Washburn and freshman Maia Sethi added shots on goal as well.

At the end of regulation, Case Western Reserve had a key chance to score. Washburn took a shot on a free kick that was saved by the Violets' goalkeeper in the 90th minute. Freshman Johanna Dunkers took a shot on the rebound, but her effort was blocked by an NYU defender to end the second half.

The teams were evenly balanced throughout the match. The Spartans took 11 shots to the Violets' 13, and the Spartans had four shots on goal to the Violets' six.

Case Western Reserve looks to rebound when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Chatham University (4-3-3) for its penultimate non-conference match on Tuesday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
