Spartan Men Earn 4-1 Victory at Westminster (Pa.)

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team recorded a 4-1 victory, scoring a pair of goals in each half, against non-conference opponent Westminster (Pa.) College on Monday evening in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.

The Spartans advance to 6-5-4 overall, while the Titans drop to 10-6-2 on the season.

At the 10:57 mark of the first half, the Spartans jumped out to the early lead as first-year midfielder Matt Vatne scored via an assist from senior forward Zachary Senft. The goal was Vatne's second of the season, while the assist was Senft's second on the year.

After a goal from Westminster's Peter Mattocks evened the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute, CWRU would reclaim the lead in the 34th minute when junior forward Seldon Magruder tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Spartans added to their advantage at the 56:41 mark of the second half, as first-year midfielder Adrian Harkness notched his first collegiate goal. Senft and senior midfielder Garrett Winter were each credited with an assist on the score. That was Senft's second assist of the day and third on the season, while Winter registered his first assist of the campaign.

CWRU closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute when sophomore midfielder Ethan MacGillivray scored his first goal of the season, as senior midfielder Brian Woo and sophomore defender Brendan Murray were each credited with an assist. The assist was Woo's second of the season and Murray's first.

Senft finished the game with a team-best four shots, including two on goal, while Harkness and Winter each tallied three total shots. In net, first-year goalkeeper Jackson Kallen made his eighth start of the season and made three saves to improve to 3-3-2 overall. Junior Andrew Engelmeyer entered in relief and made one save in his nine minutes of action.

Case Western Reserve will return to UAA play with a pair of road matches this weekend. First, the Spartans will travel to Chicago, Illinois on Friday, November 1st to face the third-ranked University of Chicago at 7:00 p.m. ET. From there, CWRU will head to St. Louis, Missouri on Sunday, November 3rd for a 2:30 p.m. ET match against Washington (Mo.) University.
