Box Score A goal in the 87th minute was the difference as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell to non-conference opponent Denison University, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spartans are 5-3-0 overall on the season, while the Big Red improves to 6-2-0 on the campaign.
The first half remained scoreless on Tuesday evening, as Denison held the advantage in shots (11-8) and corner kicks (5-0).
CWRU came out aggressive to begin the second half and were able to gain the lead in the 59th minute when freshman midfielder Taylor Bova laced a shot that was saved by the Denison keeper, but freshman forward Christina Hickson was able to recover the ball after the save and shoot it into the back of the net. The score was Hickson's team-leading sixth goal of the season, while Bova was credited with her first career assist.
The Big Red countered with a goal from Maggie Armstrong in the 73rd minute to tie the match at 1-1. Denison's Kelly O'Neil then sent the game-winner into the back of the net with just 2:43 remaining on the clock.
For the match, the Spartans outshot Denison 21-17 and held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Senior midfielder Emily Dickens and junior midfielder Ana Petropoulos each recorded three shots on goal for the match.
In net, sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Metz recorded four saves.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Saturday, September 29th, when the team heads Waltham, Massachusetts to begin conference play against 12th-ranked Brandeis University. The game is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
