#19 CWRU Tops Capital; Reaches Sectional Round of NCAA's

The 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated Capital University 3-0 in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans will now advance to the sectional round of the NCAA Championships and will play Kenyon College. In addition, Calvin has advanced to the sectional round and will await the winner of the John Carroll University and Penn State Behrend match.

CWRU and Capital played to a scoreless first half, as both sides had opportunities to score. The Crusaders outshot the Spartans in the first half, while also holdind the 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans came out firing in the second half as CWRU got on the board when sophomore midfielder Connor Weber sent a cross from a corner kick to junior midfielder Garrett Winter in the middle of box, and Winter was able to capitalize with his ninth goal of the season.

Less than 15 seconds later at the 51:08 mark, Winter dribbled into the middle of the box and passed to junior forward Zachary Senft who cutting down the left side. Senft then laced a shot into the lower right corner of the net for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

CWRU capped off its scoring at the 72:26 mark when freshman midfielder Peter Dernelle recovered a ball after a saved shot and launched the ball into the top right of the goal. The score was Dernelle's second of the campaign.

The Spartans outshot Capital in the second half (9-4), and finished the game with 12-9 advantage in shots. Senft led CWRU with a team-high three shots, while Dernelle tallied a team-high two shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Charlie Fink was once again exceptional in net, as he made six saves throughout his 90 minutes of action. He improved to 16-3-1 individually on the season.

Game times and locations for the four sectional round sites will be announced by early Monday by the NCAA on ncaa.com.  Additional information will be posted to athletics.case.edu once it is made available.
