CWRU Women's Soccer Falls to #1 Wash U. on Senior Night

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team hung tight with the top-ranked team in the country throughout the night on Friday, but a goal in each half by nationally first-ranked Washington (Mo.) University propelled the Bears past the Spartans 2-0 on Senior Night at DiSanto Field.

The loss dropped Case Western Reserve to 6-6-0 overall, including a 0-3-0 mark in University Athletic Association games, while Washington improved to 12-0-0 overall with a 3-0-0 conference ledger.

The Bears struck for their first goal of the game in the 24th minute when Erin Flynn received a cross from Darcy Cunningham and headed it into the net. The goal was her fourth of the season. The contest remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half.

In the second half, the Spartans best chance of the game came in the 50th minute, when senior midfielder Emily Dickens laced a shot that just went wide of the goal.

WashU secured the victory late in the second, when Kristen Reikersdorfer launched a shot from the right side of the field that hit the top left corner of the net. The score was her first of the season.

 Prior to the start of Friday's match, the Spartans recognized its six graduating senior players – defender Toni Alloy, midfielder Angelina Batty, midfielder Emily Dickens, forward Melanie Kukura, Megan Masterson and forward Maggie Tyma. The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer class of 2018 has helped the Spartans compile 26 wins over the last four seasons.  With the contributions of these six seniors, the team has appeared in the United Soccer Coaches National poll, while consistently ranking among the top teams in the Great Lakes Region.  In addition, the team has excelled academically, earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award in each of their four seasons at CWRU.

The Spartans will continue their home stand on Sunday, October 14th at 1:30 p.m., hosting the 13th-ranked University of Chicago at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
