Men's Soccer Concludes Season with 2-1 Win over CMU on 'Senior Night'

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win against Carnegie Mellon University on Senior Night at DiSanto Field.

The Spartans see their season at 7-9-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the University Athletic Association, the Tartans end their regular season at 10-4-3 overall and 2-3-2 in the UAA.

Carnegie Mellon's Elliot Cohen put the Tartans on the board early in the first half, scoring via a cross from Ryan Stinebaugh at the 15:12 mark. The score would remain 1-0 through the remainder of the first half.

The Spartans evened the score in the 75th minute of the second half when sophomore midfielder Garrett Winter struck from 18 yards out for his second score of the season. Sophomore midfielder Marques Manta and senior midfielder Paul Darmstadter were credited with an assist on the play.

CWRU continued to force on the attack and claimed their first lead of the game less than five minutes later. Darmstadter laced a free kick from approximately 25 yards at the 80:07 mark to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The goal was Darmstadter's third of the season.

The Spartans outshot the Tartans 14-12 for the game. Senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle played the entire second half, made three saves, and earned the win to improve to 6-9-2 on the season.

Prior to the start of the game, the team recognized its six graduating senior players, forward Michael Balog, goalkeeper Calvin Boyle, midfielder Paul Darmstadter, goalkeeper Christian Grimme, forward Alex Keller-Biehl and defender Jack Rademacher – who were each playing in the penultimate home game of their collegiate careers. Together the group has compiled 32 wins over the past four years. With their contributions, the team has appeared in the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) National Poll as high as No. 16 during the 2015 season, while consistently ranking among the top teams in the Great Lakes Region. In addition, the team has excelled academically, recording the third best GPA of all Division III teams in the 2015-16 season.

Saturday's game concludes the 2017 campaign for Case Western Reserve.
