Box Score The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 conference battle against Washington (Mo.) University on Friday evening at Francis Field in St. Louis, Missouri.
CWRU is now 5-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the University Athletic Association, while Washington advances to 7-3-1 and 1-2-0 in the UAA.
The Spartans were first to find the back of the net. In the 15th minute of play, sophomore midfielder Zachary Senft received a cross from junior Alex Besl and headed it into the back of the net to give CWRU an early 1-0 edge. The goal was Senft's fifth of the season.
The Bears evened the game at 1-1 when Chris Rieger found the back of the net at the 31:11 mark. The game remained knotted at 1-1 through the remainder of the half.
In the second half, WashU captured the lead early when Ben Strozewski scored his second goal of the season at the 50:18 mark off a rebound that was shot by Ryan Sproule.
CWRU tried several times to even the score as they took nine of their 11 shots in the second half and came close to scoring on several occasions.
Senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle went the distance and made six saves throughout the match.
The Bears outshot the Spartans 17-11 and also attempted three more corner kicks. Besl recorded a team-high four shots, including three on goal.
Case Western Reserve will continue its road-trip on Sunday afternoon when the Spartans play against the 13th-ranked University of Chicago at Stagg Field. The match is slated for a 12:00 p.m. ET start.
