Spartans Bounce Back with 4-0 Win over Baldwin Wallace

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University scored two goals in each half on Wednesday evening, and the Spartans' defense recorded its second clean sheet of the season in a 4-0 win over Baldwin Wallace University at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 2-1-0 on the season, including a perfect 2-0-0 record at home this year.  It was the team's fifth-straight win at DiSanto Field dating back to last season, as the Spartans improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine home matches.

Baldwin Wallace dropped to 0-3-0 with the loss.

Sophomores Alex Besl, Brady Daulton and Jake Micham would each tally the first goals of their collegiate careers during Wednesday's game.  Besl started the scoring early for the Spartans, striking on a wide angle shot off a pass from junior captain Michael Balog at the 5:08 mark, giving the team a 1-0 lead.  The one-goal advantage would hold until the waning minutes of the period, when Daulton extended the lead to 2-0 at the 42:42 mark on a shot from 15 yards out.

Senior Joshua Prosser would add his team-leading third goal of the season in the 77th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to boost the team's lead to 3-0.  Capping off the scoring on Wednesday night was Micham, who connected on a shot from 20-yards out off a pass from junior Alex Keller-Biehl.

The shutout was the second through three games this season for the Spartans' defense, which has allowed just one goal through 270 minutes of action for a team goals-against average of 0.33.  Senior keeper Thomas Nolan started and went the distance on Wednesday, making four saves en route to improving to 2-0-0, and notching his first career shutout.

The Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets 16-11 in the game, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.  Besl led the team with four shots.

Case Western Reserve will wrap-up its brief two-match home stand on Sunday afternoon, when the team faces an early-season test against nationally 17th-ranked DePauw University.  The contest is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at DiSanto Field.
