Spartan Women Fall to #11 WashU in Home Finale

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell to 11th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) 3-0 in their final home game of the season at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-7-4 overall, including a 0-4-2 ledger in University Athletic Association play.  Washington raised its overall record to 13-2-2 with a 4-1-1 UAA mark.

The Bears took the lead in the 37th minute of play on Sunday, when Katie Chandler collected the ball off a deflection from her own shot, and buried a second shot into the top corner of the net from 10 yards out for her seventh goal of the season.  The score remained 1-0 until the second half, when a 54th minute corner kick from Hannah Rosenberg was headed into the net by Elise Brown for her third goal of the campaign.  Washington capped off the scoring for the day with an 80th minute goal by Jessica Kovach, her first of the season, as she secured a cross from Mariana Alisio and sent a shot into the back of the net.

Freshman Lauren Unterborn made her first career start in goal on Sunday, making five saves in the game for the Spartans.  Playing in the final home game of their collegiate careers, senior Mahya Krouse came off the bench to lead Case Western Reserve with two total shots, both of which were on goal, while senior Pauline Van Dijck added a shot on goal as well.  The Spartans finished the game with seven total shots, including four on goal, while the Bears took 15 shots in the game, with eight on target.

Sunday marked the final home game for seven other CWRU seniors in addition to Krouse and Van Dijck – Emma Hawley, Amy Lindberg, Jennifer Zajic, Anne Backlund, Christine Breindel, Madeline Pollifrone and Marley Praprost.

The Spartans will wrap-up their 2016 campaign next weekend, when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, November 5th at 1:00 p.m.
