Hageman's Double-Double Not Enough, Spartan Women Fall to No. 6/7 Washington U.

CLEVELAND – Freshman forward Kara Hageman (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) scored a career-high 15 points as part of her first collegiate double-double, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell by a score of 89-65 to No. 6/7 nationally ranked Washington University in St. Louis in Sunday University Athletic Association action at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (7-13, 1-8 UAA) drop their sixth in a row, while the Bears (19-1, 8-1 UAA) win their fifth straight to stay tied atop the conference.

Hageman's 15 points were accompanied by a career-best 10 rebounds. Junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also scored in double-figures with 12.

Alyssa Johanson and Melissa Gilkey led three Bears in double-digits with 13 points each. Gilkey also posted seven rebounds.

For the game, the Bears shot an even .500 compared to .407 for CWRU. The visitors also led in second-chance points, 24-10.

The Spartans hung around for most of the first half as a Hageman three-pointer brought the score to 22-18 with 8:06 on the clock. However, the Bears responded with a 12-3 run which bumped the lead to 34-21 as Jordan Thompson hit two free throws at 2:43.

By halftime, the Bears led 44-23. The largest lead of the game was 31 with 9:49 left to play.

The Spartans now hit the road for games in New York City and Boston next weekend. New York University is the first opponent on Friday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Jerome S. Coles Center.
