Spartan Women Fall 61-60 to Emory in Throwback Weekend Opener

Box Score

CLEVELAND – Junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored a season-high 21 points, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell to Emory University, 61-60, in the opening game of the school's 10th Annual Throwback Weekend at Adelbert Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Spartans to 7-16 overall and 1-11 in the University Athletic Association. The one-point loss was the team's fourth since conference play began.

The Eagles sweep the season series with CWRU and improve to 12-11 (4-8 UAA) for the year.

In addition to Mummey, freshman forward Kara Hageman (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) posted a career-best 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Senior guard Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) added eight points and game highs of 11 rebounds and seven assists.

The Eagles were paced by Khadijah Sayyad's 20 points and seven rebounds. Illene Tsao recorded 10 points, eight boards and four assists.

Fueled by its defense, Emory built a 19-8 lead as Tsao hit a jumper with 9:07 left to play in the first half. The Spartans later trimmed the deficit to six when Hageman nailed a jumper to bring the count to 26-20 with 3:07 on the clock. The Eagles then ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 31-20 advantage into the locker room. Hageman scored 12 of her points in the opening period on 4-of-4 shooting.

In the second, CWRU opened on an 11-2 run, and a layup from Orcutt cut the Emory lead to 33-31 with 15:06 remaining. Emory rebuilt its edge to eight, at 46-38, after Tsao forced a turnover and took the ball coast-to-coast for a layup with 10:32 left.

The Spartans again responded with a 10-2 run, and a three-point-play by Mummey knotted the score at 48 with 7:08 left to play. Back-and-forth play ensued for the next five minutes, but the Eagles were able to go back on top by six (60-54) when Dumebi Egbuna scored a layup with 2:03 on the clock. The Spartans scored six of the final seven in the game, and had the ball down three in the final seconds, but could only manage a two-point bucket with one second remaining.

The Spartans will put a wrap on Throwback Weekend against the University of Rochester (N.Y.) this Sunday, February 22. The UAA foes will tip off at 2:00 p.m. at Adelbert Gymnasium.
