Box Score CLEVELAND – Sophomore forward Alexa Williams (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored with less than three minutes remaining in regulation as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team edged Wittenberg University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field.
The win elevates CWRU's record to 2-1-0 for the young season. The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10 when they visit Buffalo State University (N.Y.) at 5:00 p.m.
The teams played scoreless until the 88th minute when senior forward Christine Straka (Prospect Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) gathered a loose ball down the right side and sent a cross to Williams. Williams was able to settle the ball and direct a shot past Wittenberg (1-2) goalkeeper Alexa Murrietta for the deciding goal.
Senior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) needed just one save to earn her second shutout of the season.
Despite a total of 18 shot attempts for the two squads, prime scoring chances were scarce. Wittenberg's best opportunity to score came in the waning moments of the first half. After a corner kick into the box, Tiger forward Emma Hawthorn had a look at an empty net. However, an alert Spartan defender was able to block the shot from entering the goal, keeping the contest scoreless.
For the match, CWRU outshot the visitors 11-7, while Wittenberg held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
