CLEVELAND – Senior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) scored her third goal of the season in the 75th minute as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated Baldwin Wallace University, 1-0, on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field.

The victory vaults the Spartans to 4-1-1, while Baldwin Wallace drops to 1-5-1.  CWRU is now 9-0-2 in its past 11 non-conference home matches.

Sabers, the reigning University Athletic Association Co-Offensive Player of the Week, received a long pass from junior defender Lauren Wichman (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and tipped a bouncing ball over Baldwin Wallace goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge for the lone marker of the contest. The goal was the 10th game winner of Sabers' career, adding to her program record.

The Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets 12-3 in the first half, but Tallmadge made several key saves to keep the contest scoreless. In the 14th minute, senior forward Caitlyn McGillis (Fraser, Mich./Regina) hammered a shot from the left wing, but Tallmadge punched the ball over the bar. Moments later, an attempt by sophomore forward Alexa Williams (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was blocked and rebounded to Sabers in the box. Sabers launched a shot towards the left side of the net, but Tallmadge made a spectacular diving save. 

For the game, Tallmadge made 10 saves. Spartan senior netminder Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) made four stops to earn her third shutout of the season.

The Spartans owned a 19-6 advantage in shot attempts and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

CWRU will return to action on Saturday, September 20 at Ohio Northern University. Kickoff between the Spartans and Polar Bears is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Ada.
