Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) tied the match in the 74th minute of regulation then scored in the third minute of overtime to send the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory versus SUNY Buffalo State on Wednesday evening at Coyer Field.
Sabers bumps her career goals total to 18, and the game winner was her ninth – now a CWRU career record. The senior captain moves into a tie for third place in program history in goals and into sole possession of seventh for career points (44).
The Spartans (3-1) fell behind early as a penalty in the box set up Buffalo State's (1-1-2) Breanna Knight for a penalty kick at the 6:22 mark – her first goal of the season. The reminder of the half went scoreless despite a total of five shots by each side.
More scoreless play ensued in the second, but the Spartans were able to break through for the tying goal at 73:20. Sophomore midfielder Amy Lindberg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) sent in a great pass, and Sabers was able to strike from the corner for her first goal of 2014.
At 2:03 of overtime, Sabers dribbled past a defender and drilled a shot into the right side of the net for the win.
For the match, the Spartans led in shots, 11-8, but the Bengals held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.
In goal, senior Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) totaled three saves en route to her 11th career victory. Jessica McCarey took the loss for the Bengals with five saves.
The Spartans return home for a pair of home matches beginning with a Sunday, September 14 matchup with Centre College (Ky.). Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in the opener of a women's and men's doubleheader at DiSanto Field.
