Case Western Reserve Presents 2013-14 Athletic Department Awards

CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University Athletics along with the Case Association of Student-Athletes (CASA) presented its annual department awards on Monday, April 28 at the 2014 All-Sports Banquet at the Veale Center.

Patricia B. Kilpatrick Award

Four-year varsity participant with the highest G.P.A.

Scott Campbell (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls)
Football – Senior – Outside Linebacker
Scott Campbell has maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a biology major.

Wyatt Hoch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg)
Cross Country/Track & Field – Senior – Distance Specialist
Wyatt Hoch maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a biochemistry major.

Steven Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton)
Football – Senior – Fullback
Steven Magister has maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a biochemistry major.

Nancy Gray Rookie of the Year

Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake)
Softball – Freshman – Pitcher/Outfielder

Annie Wennerberg has played in 39 games with 21 starts on the mound for the Spartan softball team. Annie leads the team with 12 wins to go along with 93 strikeouts, six complete games and a 2.96 ERA in 120 2/3 innings. At the plate, Annie boasts a .316 batting average with five doubles, five home runs and 14 RBI. She helped lead the CWRU softball team to a share of its first University Athletic Association title since 1999. Academically, Annie earned a Spartan Scholar-Athlete award as a freshman in nursing. 

Bill Sudeck Rookie of the Year

Luke Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson)
Wrestling – Freshman – 149 pounds

Luke Marcelli posted a team-best 30-12 record with five pins and four technical falls at 149 pounds. Luke was named an NWCA Scholar All-American as well as a two-time UAA Wrestler of the Week. He placed third at the RIT Invitational, fifth at the Citrus Invitational and fifth at the W&J Invitational. Luke also earned a Spartan Scholar-Athlete award as a freshman in biology (pre-med).

Dorothy L. Hoza Award

Given to the female freshman, sophomore or junior student-athlete, who has made a strong contribution to the Women's Intercollegiate Sports Program, maintained a high level of academic achievement, shown leadership on the team and contributed service to the department and university.

Kelsey Aamoth  (Solon, Ohio/Solon)
Women's Cross Country/Track & Field – Sophomore – Distance Specialist

Kelsey Aamoth earned NCAA All-Great Lakes Region, All-UAA and All-Ohio honors during the cross country season as well as All-Ohio and All-UAA status during both the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Kelsey was an individual champion six times on the track with a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the All-Ohio Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Academically, she earned UAA All-Academic honors and USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete status as a biomedical engineering major. Kelsey volunteers at the MetroHealth System's Pediatric Wellness Center and is a research assistant in biomedical engineering. She was also named CWRU's Nancy Gray Rookie of the Year in 2013.

Arthur P. Leary Award

The award is given to the outstanding freshman, sophomore, or junior who has demonstrated leadership on the team, maintained good academic standing at the university, demonstrated good sportsmanship, and made a contribution to the department and university.

Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory)
Men's Basketball – Junior – Forward

A team captain, Dane McLoughlin averaged 14.8 points per game and earned second-team All-UAA honors for the second season in a row. Dane ranked fifth in the UAA in rebounding (6.5 rpg) while leading the conference in minutes played per game (34.6). A biology major, Dane was also named UAA All-Academic for the second straight season. He works in a lab that focuses on the mechanisms of sensory information processing and is a teaching assistant for a biology lab.

Emily R. Andrews Award

The award is given to the outstanding senior who has made a strong contribution to the Women's Intercollegiate Sports Program, maintained a high level of academic achievement, shown leadership in team, and contributed service to the department and university.

Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley)
Women's Soccer – Senior – Midfielder/Forward

Leah Levey, a four-time All-UAA selection and two-time All-Great Lakes Region honoree, finished second on the team with 14 points on six goals and two assists. In 74 career matches as a forward/midfielder, Leah ranks fifth in program history in goals (17), seventh in total points (43), tied for first in game winners (8), first in starts (73) and tied for second in matches played (74). This season, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team and for the third time earned UAA All-Academic honors as a nutrition major. She was also heavily involved in the Case chapter of the Likoni Community Football Club – supporting youth soccer in Kenya. Leah's older sister, Deena '12, earned the Andrews Award last year.

Philip K. "Nip" Heim Award

Presented annually to the senior male student-athlete who has made the most outstanding contribution to Case Western Reserve University through the athletics program. The selection is based on if he demonstrated leadership on the team, maintained good academic standing at the university, demonstrated good sportsmanship, participated in at least two years in the Case athletics program, and demonstrated loyalty to team and university.

Ray Kelly (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute)
Baseball – Senior – Pitcher

A team captain, Ray Kelly was named to the UAA Championship All-Tournament team this season as the Spartans earned a share of a second-straight league title. In 98 career innings pitched, he is 13-2 with two saves, a 3.67 ERA and 74 strikeouts. This season, Ray is 6-1 in a team-high 16 appearances and has a 2.63 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings of work. He ranks fifth in school history in career wins and tied for seventh with 44 appearances. Also an academic standout, Ray is a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree. He maintained a 3.7 undergraduate GPA as a biology/bioethics double-major, and he is currently working on a master's degree in bioethics. Ray is a tour guide for the Office of Admissions, recruitment chair and pledge educator for his fraternity and Vice President of Recruitment for the Inter-fraternity Congress.

Glenn and Peggy Nicholls Female Athlete of the Year

Maggie Dillione (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
Women's Swimming & Diving – Senior – Butterfly/Freestyle Specialist

A two-year captain, Maggie is a four-time NCAA All-American that holds a pair of individual school records in the 100-yard butterfly (56.14) and 200 fly (2:03.05). As a senior, she placed third in the nation in the 200 fly and seventh in the 100 event. She is also a member of two school-record quartets in the 200 medley and 400 medley relays. A 2013 CSCAA Scholar All-American and three-time UAA All-Academic honoree as a biology (pre-med) major, Maggie is a nine-time All-UAA performer and the league's 2013 and 2014 200 fly champion. She was named CWRU's Nancy Gray Rookie of the Year in 2011 and the Dorothy L. Hoza Award winner in 2013.  

Dr. David Hutter Male Athlete of the Year

Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson)
Track & Field – Senior – Thrower

A team captain, Harry Weintraub won the hammer throw at the UAA Outdoor Championship Meet for the fourth time in as many years this past weekend. The UAA Championship meet record-holder in both the hammer and weight throw (indoors) events, Harry has a total of six UAA Championships in his career. He was an NCAA All-American in the hammer last season (third place) and ranks second in the nation in the event this season (204'10). Harry holds the school record in both of his signature throwing events and was named the 2014

Bill Sudeck Outstanding Student-Athlete Award

This award honors the individual who best exemplifies the attributes of the Case Western Reserve University student-athlete in the spirit of legendary coach, mentor and friend William "Bill" Sudeck. Coach Sudeck spent more than half his life - 46 years - shaping the young minds of cross country, basketball, and track and field athletes. The award is given to the student-athlete that has demonstrated and achieved significant athletic accomplishments, academic achievements, engagement in campus activities, and has shown leadership in athletics and in the classroom.

Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill)
Men's Swimming & Diving – Senior – Mid-distance Freestyle

A team captain and four-year letterwinner, Heath is a member of two school-record relays in the 400 free (3:04.90) and 800 free (6:49.88) events. He is a 2012 CSCAA Scholar All-American and a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree as a computer engineering major. A 2013 All-UAA relay performer, Heath is president of the Case Association of Student-Athletes (CASA).
