McCoy Highlights Numerous Career-Best Performances, Spartan Women Conclude Season with 71-68 Win at Rival CMU

Box Score

PITTSBURGH – Freshman guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team to a 71-68 win at University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University in the 2014 season finale at Skibo Gymnasium.

The Spartans (10-15, 4-10 UAA) sweep the season series with their rival and wrap up the year with three wins in their final five games. The Tartans (12-13, 3-11 UAA) lose seven-of-eight to close the season.

McCoy's 19 points came on 7-of-13 shooting from the field with a career-best five three-pointers in nine attempts. Overall, four Spartan starters scored in double-figures. Reigning UAA Co-Player of the Week Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) continued her stellar play over the final month of the year with 15 points and career highs of 12 rebounds and six steals.

Junior guard Rachel Beaty (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) added a career-high 14 points with four treys in her first collegiate start, and sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) posted her third double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 boards.

Three scored in double-digits for CMU, including Jacquie Shaw with 20 points and six assists. Lisa Murphy added 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Spartans trailed until the halfway mark of the first half when senior forward Lauren Elkin (Reisterstown, Md./Carver Center for Arts & Tech.) and McCoy hit back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 22-20 with 9:28 left before half. After a Liz Otto bucket for the hosts, the Spartans rattled off nine in a row and led 31-23 following a Mooney free throw at 3:31. The Tartans trimmed their deficit down to five in the final minute, but Mooney hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Spartans a 36-29 lead at halftime.

In the second, CMU opened on a 13-6 run and tied the score at 42 with a Chandler Caufield three-pointer with 15:17 left to play. The next 10 minutes saw numerous ties and lead changes before the Spartans went ahead for good on a Beaty trey that made the score 66-64 with 2:47 remaining. Down 71-65, CMU got a three-pointer by Otto with eight seconds left then had a shot to tie after a missed free throw. However, another Otto three-point try rattled off the rim, and the Spartans held on for the win.

Without several key contributors, only eight Spartans appeared in the game. The starting five contributed 65 of the 71 points as the CWRU bench totaled only 35 minutes played.

The only Spartan starter not with double-digit points, junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge), finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

During the final eight games of the season, Mooney averaged 16.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.5 blocked shots and 2.5 steals.
