Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – A pair of 17-point efforts by senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) and senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) weren't enough as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped in an 85-74 loss at University Athletic Association foe, Brandeis University, on Friday night at Red Auerbach Arena.
The Spartans fall to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the UAA, while the Judges improve to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Including Thompson and Chung, all five Spartan starters scored in double-digits for the third game in a row. Junior guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas / Second Baptist) scored 12. Junior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) and sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) each scored 11.
The Judges were led by Derek Retos with a game-high 24 points. Brandeis also held a significant advantage in both points in the paint (34 to 14) and bench scoring (53 to 6).
In the first half, the Spartans grabbed a 9-4 lead thanks to three-pointers by Thompson, Chung and Person. Thompson later extended the lead to a high of nine (13-4) with a jumper at the 14:29 mark.
Brandeis then scored six in a row and cut the lead to 13-10 thanks to a dunk by Ishmael Kalilou at 11:41. After a Spartan bucket, the Judges took control with a 14-0 run that culminated in a Samuel Dowden three-pointer at 8:13.
The hosts lead grew to 15 (32-17) following a Retos trey at 5:11, but the Spartans were able to score eight in a row and trailed by just seven after a Thompson jumper at 2:37. Retos later hit a layup at the buzzer to put Brandeis ahead, 36-26, at halftime.
In the second, the Judge lead reached 16 when Retos hit a layup to push the score to 53-37 with 13:50 left to play. The Spartans had one last run of 14-4 to pull within 57-51 after a Chung trey at 9:26, but Brandeis was able to score four in a row to stabilize.
The Spartans hope to start a new streak when they travel to New York City to take on the New York University Violets at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9.
