Box Score CHICAGO – Junior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) scored 22 points, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team fell by a score of 95-80 at University Athletic Association rival University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at the Ratner Center.
The Spartans (13-11, 5-8 UAA) have dropped three in a row heading into the final game of the season. The Maroons (15-9, 8-5 UAA) even the season series with CWRU and have won four of their last five.
McLoughlin scored 13 of his 22 in the second half and now has 943 for his career. In addition, junior guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist) scored 20, while sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) totaled 12 points and eight assists.
Wayne Simon posted 24 points and 10 rebounds off of the bench for the Maroons, and Royce Muskeyvalley scored 24 points with five assists.
The Spartans trailed the entire way as Chicago jumped out to a 17-3 lead following a Derrick Davis layup at 13:01 of the first half. Seven minutes later, CWRU was able to trim the deficit to single digits with a Person three-pointer that brought the score to 28-19 at 6:47. At 4:21, Person hit another jumper to cap a 10-4 run that cut the lead to 32-26, but Chicago got back-to-back treys by Royce Muskeyvalley en route to building a 45-34 halftime advantage.
The Maroons built their lead to 17 on two occasions to open the second half, including at 59-42 when Simon hit a layup at 14:12. The Spartans refused to go away and utilized a 7-2 run to pull within 61-49 as McLoughlin nailed a jumper with 12:38 left to play. A triple from McLoughlin at 9:18 brought the score to 68-59, but Chicago was quickly able to bump its lead back to double-figures.
The Spartans wrap up the season next Saturday, March 1 at rival Carnegie Mellon University at 5:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh. The team has already clinched its first winning season since the 2009-10 campaign.
