Box Score ST. LOUIS – The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered an 87-61 loss at No. 3 nationally ranked Washington University in St. Louis in University Athletic Association action on Friday night at WU Field House.
The Spartans (13-10, 5-7 UAA) were limited to .319 shooting from the field compared to .529 for the Bears (21-2, 12-0 UAA). The hosts also held a whopping 50-18 advantage in points in the paint.
Junior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) finished with 13 points, while senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) totaled six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Four-of-five Washington U. starters scored in double-figures led by Tim Cooney and Nick Burt with 15 points apiece.
The Bears, who never trailed in the game, led 10-2 following a Chris Klimek layup at the 17:18 mark of the first half. After a McLoughlin three got the Spartans to within 13-10, Washington U. opened the game up with a 10-2 run that ended in a Klimek layup, making the score 23-12 at 12:06. The Spartans hung around and got to within 33-27 after another McLoughlin trey at 4:09, but the hosts finished the half on a 12-4 run to lead 45-31.
The second half opened with an 8-0 run for the Bears, and the lead reached 22 as a Burt layup made the score 53-31 with 18:49 left to play.
The Spartans return to action at the University of Chicago on Sunday, February 23 at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
