Spartan Women Drop 1-0 Heartbreaker at No. 4 Carnegie Mellon

Box Score

PITTSBURGH – Senior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) kept her team in the match with a career-high 10 saves, but a header with just eight seconds remaining in regulation left the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision at No. 4 nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

The Spartans, facing their second top five opponent in three matches, drop to 8-5-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the University Athletic Association. The Tartans, also ranked first in the NCAA Great Lakes Region, improve to 13-1-0 overall, 4-1-0 UAA (first place).

After Smith had turned away countless scoring threats by the hosts, CMU's Savina Reid broke through at 89:52 with a header following a corner cross from Katie Strycharz. The goal was Reid's ninth of 2014.

The Spartans were outshot, 20-5, but were able to hang around thanks to the valiant effort of Smith. Her first of many key moments came in the 36th minute when she made a fine diving stop on a Reid header. In the second half, Smith came up clutch again with a save on a Reid breakaway in the 70th minute and a stop on a solid look at the net by Haili Adams early in the 90th minute.

Only three of CWRU's shots were on goal, and two came off of the foot of sophomore midfielder Amy Lindberg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison).

CWRU is back in action on Sunday, November 2 at No. 21 Emory University at 1:30 p.m. in Atlanta. The team closes the regular season the following Saturday, November 8 at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m.
