Box Score CLEVELAND – Freshman midfielder Madeleine Harris (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) scored her first collegiate goal in the third minute of play, and the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team won its final non-conference home match by a score of 1-0 versus Kenyon College on Thursday evening at DiSanto Field.
The Spartans, unbeaten in seven in a row, improve to 6-1-2 headed into University Athletic Association action. The Ladies drop to 4-6-1.
With the shutout, CWRU has not allowed a goal in 431 consecutive minutes. Centre College (Ky.) accounted for the last goal at the 59:00 mark on September 14.
On Thursday, the Spartans took little time in finding the opposing net as Harris took a pass from senior forward Christine Straka (Prospect Heights, Ill./Saint Viator), jostled around a defender in the box, and a sent a shot into the upper right corner of the goal at the 2:59 mark.
While Kenyon was unable to generate many scoring opportunities the rest of the way, the Spartans did threaten to add to their lead several times in the second with multiple shots by Straka and sophomore forward Alexa Williams (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford).
The only time the Ladies sustained possession in the CWRU end, freshman defender Neha Cheemalavagu (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) blocked a shot with 12:10 remaining to regain control for the Spartans.
For the match, the Spartans outshot the Ladies, 15-5, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentagy Liberty) needed just one save for her fourth consecutive shutout and 11th career. Alissa Poolpol made eight stops for the visitors.
The Spartans now hit the road for the 2014 UAA opener at Brandeis University on Sunday, October 5 at 1:30 p.m. in Waltham, Massachusetts. Both teams are positioned just outside of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25.
