Spartans Battle No. 14 Chicago to Scoreless Draw in Home Finale

Box Score

CLEVELAND – Back on the pitch for the first time since taking down the No. 2 program in the country, the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team closed out its home schedule with a 0-0 tie versus No. 13 University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field.

With the draw, the Spartans sit at 8-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the University Athletic Association. It was the third consecutive overtime match for the Spartans, including Friday night's 2-1 victory against Washington University in St. Louis.

Chicago is now 11-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 against conference competition.

Senior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) made six stops in net for the Spartans, while Mallory Morse and Jacinda Reid combined to make three saves for the Maroons.

The best opportunity for either squad came off of a Maroons corner kick in the 63rd minute. The entry by forward Mia Calamari was redirected to midfielder Nicole Mullen, but Smith made a sprawling save on Mullen's off-balance strike.

Sophomore forward Caitlyn McGillis (Fraser, Mich./Regina) led the Spartans with three shots.

For the match, the Maroons led in shot attempts, 13-7, and corner kicks, 8-4.

The Spartans will conclude the regular season with four straight road games, beginning on Saturday, October 25, with a non-conference match at Denison University. Kickoff against the Big Red is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CWRU will resume their conference slate on October 31 against first-place Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).
