Box Score CLEVELAND – Senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) scored 18, and senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) added 17 as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team bested University Athletic Association foe Brandeis University (Mass.), 74-66, in front of a jam-packed Throwback Weekend crowd at Horsburgh Gymasnium.
As part of CWRU's ninth annual Throwback Weekend, the Spartans (11-6, 3-3 UAA) wore uniforms commemorating the Western Reserve University Red Cats. The win gives the team its best record 17 games into a season since the 1998-99 Spartans opened the year at 12-5. That squad ended up tying the school record for wins (17-9 overall).
In addition to his 17 points, Thompson added a game-high 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. Chung hit four three-pointers in the game, several of which came during key moments in the second half. Junior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) and junior guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist) also finished in double-figures with 12 points each, while sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) contributed 11 points and four assists. All five Spartan starters scored in double-figures.
The Judges (9-8, 1-5 UAA) placed three in double-figures led by Gabriel Moton and Ben Bartoldus with 17 each.
Trailing 11-8 at 14:58 of the first half, the Spartans took control with a 12-1 run that ended in a layup by Person, making the score 20-12 at the 11:31 mark. Brandeis came back with a 7-0 run and pulled to within one when Alex Stoyle hit a three-pointer with 9:15 on the clock. Later in the half, the Judges regained the lead at 27-25 following two Tim Reale free throws at 3:24. The visitor lead would remain at two headed into halftime, 31-29.
The opening minutes of the second saw back-and-forth play before the Spartans exploded for a 10-0 run to lead 48-41 as Chung nailed a three-pointer at 14:29. Brandeis twice got within four, including at 53-49 with 7:09 remaining, but the Spartans answered with a 10-3 run to put the game away. The lead reached a high of 12 when Chung hit a trey to make the score 70-58 with 1:26 on the clock.
The Spartans wrap up Throwback Weekend versus New York University in Case Institute of Technology Rough Rider uniforms this Sunday, February 2 at 12:00 p.m.
