Box Score ATLANTA – Senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) scored 19 points, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team fell victim to the fast pace and hot three-point shooting of host Emory University, 102-76, on Sunday afternoon at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
The Spartans (9-5, 1-2 University Athletic Association) suffer back-to-back losses for the first time this season. The Eagles (10-4, 2-1 UAA) win their fourth in five games.
Chung matched a career best with six three-pointers in the contest to lead a quartet of Spartans in double-figures. Senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) scored 17, while junior forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) and sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich. /Pioneer) added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Eagles were led by McPherson Moore with a game-high 31 points on 7-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Jake Davis added 27 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
As a team, Emory hit 15 three-pointers compared to Case's eight and led in fast-break scoring, 30-0.
Emory came out of the gate fast and led 22-9 when Moore hit a three at the 14:00 mark. However, Case was able to battle back with an 8-0 run as McLoughlin hit a three-pointer at 12:17 to bring the score to 22-17.
Unfortunately for Case, Emory's hot shooting continued and back-to-back threes quickly extended the home lead to 11. The Spartans twice cut the deficit to under 10, but after Thompson hit two free throws to pull his squad to within 47-40, Moore hit a three at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 50-40 lead at the break.
The second half followed a similar script in the early exchanges as the Eagles extended their lead to 19 at the 16:06 mark. Case couldn't recover from that point.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, January 24 versus Washington University in St. Louis at 8:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium. That contest will open a four-game UAA homestand.
