Box Score CLEVELAND – Junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory in its 2013 home opener versus Heidelberg University on Friday evening at Case Field.
The Spartans improve to 2-1 for the young season and remain at home to host The College of Wooster on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. The loss drops the Student Princes to 0-3.
Sabers scored her first goal of the season at the 15:15 mark off of a pass into the box by sophomore midfielder Kiley Armstrong (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy). The goal was Sabers' 10th career, while the helper was Armstrong's first.
Senior forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) added to the lead at the end of the 36th minute when she collected a loose ball at the 35, split the Heidelberg defense, and fired a shot into the net from 20 yards out. The goal was Levey's second this season and 12th career.
The Spartans then added one more score for good measure at 81:33 as Sabers sent a through ball into the box to set up sophomore midfielder Rachel Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio/River View) for her first career goal.
In net, junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) started and played the first half with one save to improve to 2-1 for the year. Junior Cameron Casson (Allen, Texas/Allen) and sophomore Megan Romelfanger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) combined to play the final 45.
For the match, the Spartans led in both shots (32-4) and corner kicks (4-1). Heidelberg goalie Molly Schriber posted 14 saves.
Following Tuesday's match with Wooster, the Spartans embark on a four-match road trip beginning at Oberlin College on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
