Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio – A goal in the 49th minute proved to be the winner as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell by a score of 1-0 at Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field.
The Spartans (3-4) will try to snap a three-match losing skid against Ohio Northern University at home at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 at Case Field.
The Ladies (2-5) snapped a three-game losing streak of their own with the shutout.
The Spartans were the aggressors throughout the first half with a 10-2 shot advantage. Senior forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) and senior midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) each tallied four shots in the half.
The second half began in similar fashion when sophomore forward Rachel Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio/River View) sent a shot that sailed high at 46:21 as the Spartans continued to pepper Kenyon goalkeeper Lauren Wolfe.
Just two minutes later, however, it was the Ladies' that cashed in one of their few opportunities as Becca Romaine was able to beat Spartan junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) unassisted at 48:48.
The Spartans threatened to tie the score three times in the final minutes, but shots by Levey, Bourque and sophomore midfielder Kate Dolansky (Brecksville, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) were each saved by Wolfe.
For the match, the Spartans outshot the Ladies, 18-8, and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Smith recorded four saves, while Wolfe posted eight.
Following Tuesday's match versus ONU, the Spartans wrap up a brief two-match homestand versus local-rival John Carroll University on Sunday, Sept. 29.
