Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wittenberg University's Kayla Murphy scored just over a minute into overtime to lead her squad to a 1-0 victory versus the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Maurer Field.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Spartans (3-2), who will look to get back on track cross town in Berea versus Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m.
The Tigers evened their mark at 3-3-1 for the season.
Junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) had a strong match between the pipes with a season high-tying six saves, but Wittenberg's Kelsey Lorko doubled that total by stopping 12 Spartan shots.
After two full halves of scoreless soccer, Murphy capitalized after a shot from Tobie Weston was initially stopped by Smith. Murphy timed a back-post run and knocked the game winner into the net at the 91:06 mark.
The Spartans led overall in shots, 19-13, with five coming off of the foot of senior co-captain Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley). Junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), senior midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) and junior midfielder Christine Straka (Prospect Heights, Ill./Saint Viator) each had two shots on goal.
Case had several significant chances to win late, but shots by junior defender Megan Novak (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) at 86:27 and Bourque at 87:41 were each turned away by Lorko.
Following Wednesday's match at BW, the Spartans cocnclude a three-match road trip at Kenyon College on Saturday, Sept. 21.
