Box Score CLEVELAND – Junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio, Dublin Jerome) scored in the 106th minute to lead the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team to a 1-0 double overtime victory versus The College of Wooster on a hot and humid Tuesday night at Case Field.
The Spartans improve to 3-1 heading into a season-long four-match road trip. The Fighting Scots (4-1) suffer their first loss of the season.
Sabers' goal, her second in as many games, came at 105:52 of double overtime following a corner kick by senior forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio, Bexley). Freshman defender Christine Breindel (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) was credited with the assist after deflecting the corner into a Wooster defender. Sabers then tapped the ball across the line for the winner.
Most of the match was a defensive struggle, but each team had significant chances throughout.
The Spartans threatened to become the first team to score on Wooster in the first half this season when a left-footed strike from Levey was saved by stretched out Fighting Scot goalkeeper Elizabeth Clark at 12:23.
Eventually the first half ended with Case holding a 4-1 lead in shots. Wooster had outscored its previous opponents, 7-0 in the first half, on a 28-1 shot advantage.
The Spartans threatened again at the 66:02 mark when junior midfielder Christine Straka (Prospect Heights, Ill., St. Viator) crossed the ball into the center of box to set up senior midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic), but the shot by the co-captain was blocked.
Kelsey Clark had a golden opportunity for the visitors from the center of the Spartan box, but her left-footed shot was pulled wide right at the 72:39 mark.
In the first overtime, a corner kick by the Scots created a close-range shot for Crystal Chavez, but Spartan junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio, Olentangy Liberty) made a fine save to keep the game scoreless.
For the match, Smith (3-1) needed just one save, while Clark made five for Wooster.
Case outshot Wooster, 13-4, and both teams attempted four corner kicks.
The Spartans are back in action at Oberlin College this Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
