Case Western Reserve Presents 2012-13 Athletic Department Awards

CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University Athletics along with the Case Association of Student-Athletes (CASA) presented its annual department awards on Monday, April 29 at the 2013 All-Sports Banquet at the Veale Center.

Patricia B. Kilpatrick Award

Four-year varsity participant with the highest G.P.A.

Alyssa Harker (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor)
Cross Country/Track & Field – Sprints/Hurdles

Alyssa Harker has maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a chemistry major.

Deena Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley)
Women's Soccer – Senior - Midfielder

Deena Levey, who graduated a semester early, maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a nursing major.

Kara Monnin (Minster, Ohio/Minster)
Volleyball – Senior – Defensive Specialist

Kara Monnin has maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a psychology and sociology double-major.

Megan Milne (Naperville, Illinois/Naperville North)
Cross Country/Track & Field – Distance Specialist

Megan Milne has maintained a 4.0 grade point average as a biochemistry and Spanish double-major.

Nancy Gray Rookie of the Year

Kelsey Aamoth (Solon, Ohio/Solon)
Cross Country/Track & Field – Freshman – Distance Specialist

Kelsey Aamoth was the No. 1 runner for the Spartan cross country team during the fall. She led the team in five-of-six varsity races and was individual champion of the 12th Annual Bill Sudeck Classic. Kelsey placed 13th at the UAA Championship Meet to earn second-team all-conference honors and was an all-region performer with a 34th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. On the track, Kelsey has been the team's top performer in both the outdoor 1,500-meter and 5,000m runs as well as the indoor 3,000m where she earned a runner-up finish at the Division III All-Ohio Championship. In the classroom, Kelsey has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a biomedical engineering major.

Bill Sudeck Rookie of the Year

Josh Hall (Galloway, Ohio/Bishop Ready)
Wrestling – Freshman – 125 pounds

Josh Hall posted a team-best 18-11 record and six pins at 125 pounds. Josh won his weight class at the UAA Championship Meet and was named the conference's Rookie of the Year. He also placed fourth in his bracket at the NCAA Mideast Regional and posted an 8-2 record in his final 10 matches of the season. Also a standout in the classroom, Josh has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a biology major.

Dorothy L. Hoza Award

Given to the female freshman, sophomore or junior student-athlete, who has made a strong contribution to the Women's Intercollegiate Sports Program, maintained a high level of academic achievement, shown leadership on the team and contributed service to the department and university.

Maggie Dillione (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North)
Women's Swimming & Diving – Junior – Butterfly/Freestyle Specialist

Maggie Dillione earned a pair of All-American finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly races at the NCAA Championship Meet in Texas this season. The team's first All-American since 2007, Maggie also won a UAA Championship in the 200 fly and set school records in both butterfly events. Out of the pool, she earned UAA All-Academic honors for the second-straight season as a biology (pre-med) major.

Arthur P. Leary Award

The award is given to the outstanding freshman, sophomore, or junior who has demonstrated leadership on the team, maintained good academic standing at the university, demonstrated good sportsmanship, and made a contribution to the department and university.

Ben McClarren (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson)
Men's Tennis – Junior

Ben McClarren is a member of a Spartan men's tennis team that has reached as high as No. 7 in the nation this season. A two-time UAA All-Academic selection as a biomedical engineering major, Ben led a tennis equipment drive to the Republic of Botswana during a summer course abroad in Southern Africa.

Emily R. Andrews Award

The award is given to the outstanding senior who has made a strong contribution to the Women's Intercollegiate Sports Program, maintained a high level of academic achievement, shown leadership in team, and contributed service to the department and university.

Deena Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley)
Women's Soccer – Senior - Midfielder

Deena Levey graduated a semester early in December as a four-time All-UAA selection on the pitch. In 2013, Deena was named third-team All-Great Lakes Region with eight points on two goals and a team-best four assists. In the classroom, she was a three-time UAA All-Academic pick and a 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VII honoree as a nursing major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Amongst her service activities, she served as vice president of the Case Western Reserve chapter of the Likoni Community Football Club.

Philip K. "Nip" Heim Award

Presented annually to the senior male student-athlete who has made the most outstanding contribution to Case Western Reserve University through the athletics program. The selection is based on if he demonstrated leadership on the team, maintained good academic standing at the university, demonstrated good sportsmanship, participated in at least two years in the Case athletics program, and demonstrated loyalty to team and university.

Wade Self (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich)
Football – Senior - Linebacker

Wade Self was a team captain and a first-team All-UAA selection at linebacker this past fall. A three-time UAA All-Academic selection, Wade also earned OhioCollegeFootball.com Division III All-Ohio Honors. Off the field, he has been easily one of the most involved student-athletes at the university through Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society, Alpha Eta Mu Beta Biomedical Engineering Honors Society and CASA. A 2012 finalist for Greek Man of the Year, Wade was a finalist for a Fulbright Scholarship and completed a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 2012. He also served as a tour guide for undergraduate admissions.

Glenn and Peggy Nicholls Female Athlete of the Year

Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame)
Women's Basketball – Senior - Guard

Evy Iacono turned in one of the most decorated seasons in school history by a Spartan women's basketball player. A D3Hoops.com All-American and the UAA Player of the Year, Evy became just the second player in program history to earn such accolades. She led the UAA in scoring at 17.9 points per game and twice set school single-season records with scoring outputs of 37 and 38 points. Also a D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week honoree, Evy was named UAA Player of the Week four times. Her success was not limited to the court as she also earned UAA All-Academic and Capital One Academic All-District VII honors.

Dr. David Hutter Male Athlete of the Year

Jarrett Gish (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast)
Baseball – Senior - Pitcher

Jarrett Gish is in the midst of one of the best seasons in school history by a Spartan pitcher. A UAA Pitcher of the Week and a UAA Championship All-Tournament Team selection, Jarrett is 6-0 with a 1.74 earned run average, four complete games and 49 strikeouts in a team-high 49 innings of work this season. A team captain, Jarrett has played a crucial role in the team's 25-12 record and march towards a potential NCAA Regionals berth.

Bill Sudeck Outstanding Student-Athlete Award

This award honors the individual who best exemplifies the attributes of the Case Western Reserve University student-athlete in the spirit of legendary coach, mentor and friend William "Bill" Sudeck. Coach Sudeck spent more than half his life - 46 years - shaping the young minds of cross country, basketball, and track and field athletes. The award is given to the student-athlete that has demonstrated and achieved significant athletic accomplishments, academic achievements, engagement in campus activities, and has shown leadership in athletics and in the classroom.

Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory)
Men's Tennis - Senior

Kyle Gerber is the winningest player in CWRU tennis history with a combined 138 victories. He has been the key piece in the team's remarkable turnaround and run to as high as No. 7 in the nation this season. A three-time UAA All-Academic selection as a biochemistry major with a 3.77 grade point average, Kyle has held numerous singles and doubles rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region and was a doubles qualifier for the 2012 NCAA Championship Tournament. Off the court, Kyle has served as a research assistant in pharmacology at University Hospitals and has been heavily involved in team service projects like Habitat for Humanity, Pan Can and Rally for the Cure.
