Box Score CLEVELAND – Senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) scored a career-high 24 points, and senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) set the school career record for blocked shots as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team defeated Oberlin College by a count of 78-68 on Monday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans improve to 5-1 for the first time since November of 2007. The team's fifth win that season also came against Oberlin.
Chung hit a career-best six three-pointers in the game as the Spartans totaled eight as a team.
Thompson, who finished with three blocks, posted his third-straight double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Two of Thompson's swats came in the first half as he surpassed 2011 graduate Eric Duerr's previous career mark of 121.
Sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) added 14 points and a game-high five assists.
Oberlin (2-7) led by four near the midway point of the first half, but the Spartans answered with a 13-2 run that culminated in a Thompson jumper and made the score 22-15 at the 6:36 mark. The home lead remained at seven (35-28) at halftime.
In the second half, the Spartan advantage briefly fell to five, at 37-32, when Oberlin's Nathan Cohen converted a layup at 18:13. However, the Spartans quickly put the game away with a 22-3 outburst that started and ended with Chung three-pointers.
The Yeomen staged one last rally with a barrage of three-pointers and pulled to within nine (69-60) when Jack Poyle capped a 23-9 run with a triple at 4:18. The Spartans regained control from there and hit 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Oberlin was led by Geoff Simpson with 17 points and five rebounds.
The Spartans are idle from competition during final exams and will not play again until the 2013 Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament on Sunday and Monday, December 29-30. Heidelberg University is Case's opening opponent of the weekend at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
