Five Score in Double-Figures, Spartan Women Defeat Brescia to Open Zimmerman Memorial Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Back in action for the first time in three weeks, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team placed a season-best five scorers in double-figures in a 76-66 victory versus Brescia University (Ky.) in the opening game of the 2013 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

The Spartans improve to 6-4 and will play host Wittenberg University tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Brescia drops to 1-9 with its ninth loss in a row.

Senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) led the Spartan scoring quintet with 14 points apiece. Junior guard Rachel Beaty (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) contributed 12, while junior forward Erin Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) and freshman guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) added 10 each.

After outscoring its last opponent (The College of Wooster), 36-7, in bench points, Case followed with a whopping 41-4 advantage versus Brescia. The Spartans were also plus 12 in both rebounding and free throw shooting.

After the Bearcats hit the opening bucket of the game, the Spartans rattled off 10 in a row and led by eight when McCoy hit a three-pointer at the 16:41 mark. That run led to six separate 10-point leads in the opening period, including the halftime score of 34-24 as Mooney hit a layup in the final minute.

In the second half, the Spartans opened the game up with a 10-0 run that ended in a Mooney layup which made the score 54-38 with 11:18 left to play. Brescia couldn't get closer than eight the rest of the way.

Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored five points and tied for the game high with six rebounds.

McCoy added five boards to her career-high 10 points.
