Spartan Men Suffer First Loss in High Scoring Affair at BW

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio – Sophomore point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored 17 points and dished out seven assists, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 88-75 at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University (1-0) on Tuesday night at Ursprung Gymnasium.

Holman led four Spartans in double-figures. Senior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) finished with 15 points, while junior forwards Brian Klements (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) and Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) contributed 13 and 10, respectively.

Jaron Crowe totaled 22 points and six assists for the Yellow Jackets. Kyle Payne and Kevin Krakowiak added 22 and 20 points, respectively, and combined to hit five of the Yellow Jackets' 12 three-pointers.

The Spartans fell behind 17-9 quickly as BW's Skyler Simpson nailed a three-pointer with 14:50 on the first-half clock. The lead grew to 10 (26-16) several possessions later, but the Spartans battled back with a 10-0 run and tied the score when sophomore forward Spencer Boyd (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finished a fast-break "alley-oop" pass from Holman at 8:19.

Case then grabbed its only lead at 30-29 following a fade-away by senior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) at 5:58, but BW answered with a 9-0 run ending in a Krakowiak three that made the score 38-30 with 3:26 left before halftime. The Spartans trimmed two off of their deficit thanks to a Holman jumper and went into the locker room down 41-34.

In the second half, BW came out on fire with 17 points in just over three minutes. Zack Brandy knocked down a triple with 15:58 remaining to put the Jackets on top 58-42. The Spartans refused to go away and used a 14-8 run over a five-minute stretch to cut the deficit to seven, at 72-65, following a Klements layup with 7:53 left to play.

However, BW came out of the ensuing timeout with a 9-2 run and led 81-67 following a Grant Fairhurst three with 5:05 to go. The Spartans were unable to get within 10 the rest of the way.

The Spartans are right back in action this Thursday, November 21 at Muskingum University at 7:30 p.m. in New Concord.
