Spartan Women Edged by No. 15 CMU, 1-0, in "Kicks for a Cause" Match

CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell by a score of 1-0 to No. 15 nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in University Athletic Association action on Friday night at DiSanto Field.

The Spartans dropped to 8-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the UAA, while the Tartans improved to 9-2-2 and 3-1-1.

The Tartans scored the only goal of the match at the 9:41 mark when Alex Venegas fired a long shot from 30 yards out into the Spartan net.

Case's best chance came in the 34th minute when the CMU goalkeeper vacated the net, but a shot off of the foot of sophomore midfielder Kiley Armstrong (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) was blocked in the box by a Tartan defender.

For the match, both teams attempted eight shots. CMU led in corner kicks, 2-1.

In goal, junior Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) recorded four saves for the Spartans. Katie Liston totaled two stops for the Tartans.

The Spartans continue a season-ending three-match homestand versus Emory University (Ga.) this Sunday, November 3 at 1:30 p.m. at DiSanto Field. The team concludes the year next Saturday, Nov. 9 with Seniors' Night versus the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 7:30 p.m.

Tonight's match was the team's annual "Kicks for a Cause" event. This season, the Spartans have chosen to support the Likoni Community Football League. Based in Kenya, the L.C.F.L. is looking to create a women's professional soccer team with the goal of empowering girls and young women in the community. Past Spartan "Kicks for a Cause" matches have yielded donations of nearly $3,400 to America SCORES Cleveland in 2011 and more than $7,000 to University Hospitals' then Ireland Cancer Center in 2010.
