Box Score CLEVELAND – Senior forward/co-captain Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) scored with 2:41 remaining in the match to give the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory in its 2013 non-conference finale verus Denison University on a cold and windy Saturday night at DiSanto Field.
Levey, who now ranks first in program history with eight game-winning goals, latched onto junior defender Megan Novak's (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) pass which eluded the Denison defense, calmly rounded Andre Karl in the Big Red (7-7-2) goal, and lifted the Spartans (8-7-1) to victory.
The team's first goal came early at the 12:39 mark of the first half when junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) took Levey's cross and beat the Denison keeper low to the left corner of the goal.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Big Red tied the score on just their second shot of the frame. Anne Denz was able to send in a low cross which was met by the foot of a sliding Jessica Skelly to beat Spartan junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) high into the top corner of the net.
Statistically, the Spartans held a 12-4 advantage in shots, including 8-3 on goal, while Denison led in corner kicks, 5-3.
Case returns to action on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. versus University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) at DiSanto Field in the program's annual "Kicks for a Cause" match. All proceeds will go to benefit the Likoni Community Football League.
