Box Score NEW YORK – Junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) earned her fifth shutout of the season with five saves as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team (7-5-1, 0-1-1) earned a hard-fought point at University Athletic Association foe New York University (6-3-3, 0-0-2) in a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans dominated the chances in the opening period, as they outshot the Violets, 12-3. Senior co-captain Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) came the closest to opening the scoring, but both of her shots on goal were saved by the NYU keeper.
With 15 minutes left in regular time, Case once again nearly produced a winning goal. Sophomore midfielder Kate Dolansky's (Brecksville, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) shot was saved and the rebound was sent just over the bar by junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome).
NYU created its best chance to score with three minutes left in the second overtime when Imani Ribadeneyra beat Smith only to see her shot crash off of the cross bar. The follow-up shot by Amelia Hammerl was sent just wide.
Statistically, Case led in shots (20-16) and corners (3-2), but NYU held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Spartans continue their three-match UAA road trip at Washington University-St. Louis at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday, October 18 before traveling to the "Windy City" to battle the University of Chicago on Sunday, Oct. 20.
