Dean Scores 17, but Spartan Men Fall 77-58 at Brandeis

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite a season-high 17 points from sophomore point guard Jordan Dean (St. Johns, Fla./Creekside), the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team lost its second-straight University Athletic Association road contest at Brandeis University by a score of 77-58 on Sunday afternoon at Red Auerbach Arena.

The Spartans, now 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the UAA, return home for the first conference home weekend of the season this Friday and Sunday, January 18-20. Brandeis, who received votes in the most recent D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll, improves to 12-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the Association.

For the game, the Judges shot a whopping 59.1 percent from the field, including 73.7% in the second half, and outrebounded the Spartans, 35-23.

Dean was 5-for-5 from the free throw line and led a trio of Spartans in double figures as senior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) and junior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) each contributed 10 points.

In the first half, the Judges scored the first five and eventually built a 7-2 lead before the Spartans moved ahead with a 9-2 run that culminated in a Dean three-pointer at the 12:46 mark. Brandeis came back with a second 5-0 run en route to building a 20-15 lead when Gabriel Moton hit two free throws at 8:13. The Spartans then answered with a 7-0 run of their own and led 22-20 after a jumper from freshman point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) at 8:13, but after several lead changes and ties, the Judges were able to score the last four points of the half to lead 33-29 at the break.

In the second, Case opened on a 6-2 run and tied the score at 35 with two free throws by sophomore forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) at 17:30. From there, Brandeis took over with a 15-4 spurt that ended in a pair of Retos free throws and made the score 50-39 with 11:52 remaining. The Spartans never got closer than nine the rest of the way, and the final 19-point deficit was the largest of the game.

Overall, Brandeis landed four players in double figures led by Gabriel Moton and Derek Retos with 17 points each.

The Spartans open next weekend on Friday evening versus Emory University (Ga.) at 8:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The University of Rochester (N.Y.) then visits Cleveland on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Both games can be viewed live at http://tv.case.edu/athletics/ with Ron Jantz and Ed Daugherty on the call.
