Spartan Men Drop Home Match with Penn State Behrend, 3-1

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ohio – With all of the scoring in the second half of play, the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team fell by a count of 3-1 to visiting Penn State Erie, The Behrend College on Tuesday evening at Case Field.

The Spartans (3-4) head back out on the road and look to get to the .500 mark at Franklin College (Ind.) on Saturday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. Penn State Behrend, ranked No. 8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Great Lakes Region, wins its sixth-straight to improve to 6-1.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half despite numerous opportunities for each side. Penn State Behrend came out firing early, but several shots missed wide and another was saved by Spartan senior goalkeeper Ryan Koepka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). Case controlled the pace during the second portion of the half, but its two best shots were foiled as senior midfielder Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) missed high on a header at 21:53 and senior midfielder Ross Twanmoh (Fallston, Md./Fallston) had a shot saved at 26:21.

The second half scoring frenzy began early as Penn State Behrend's Jimmy Belack recorded his fourth goal of the season via a through ball from Peter Brower at the 48:01 mark. The Spartans answered quickly in the 55th minute when Twanmoh found a loose ball in the box and knocked in his first goal of the season.

However, the Lions would counter less than three minutes later as Brower deflected a shot in the Spartan net following a corner kick. The visitors then added an insurance goal as Belack scored again on a breakaway assisted by Jake Gamble in the 64th minute.

Case's best chance to find the net again came with just over 31 minutes remaining when a volley shot following a long cross from sophomore forward Patrick O'Day (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) fluttered just wide of the goal.

In net, Koepka (2-4) recorded three saves in the loss for Case. Jarrod Wassell (6-1) posted four stops for the Lions.

For the match, each side attempted 14 shots, while the Spartans held a slight edge in corner kicks, 6-4.
