Three First-Half Scores Lift No. 24 Spartans Past Wooster, 3-1

Box Score

WOOSTER, Ohio – A trio of first-half goals, including sophomore forward Jessie Sabers' (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) team-best fourth of the season, lifted the No. 24 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory at The College of Wooster on Wednesday at Carl Dale Memorial Field.

The Spartans rebound from their first loss of the season this past Saturday and improve to 3-1-1 overall. The team is back in action at Case Field on Saturday, September 15 versus Oberlin College at 6:00 p.m.

Wooster dips to 3-2-1 with the loss.

Case got on the board quickly in the 11th minute when Sabers took a cross from midfielder Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) and calmly tapped the ball past the Wooster goalkeeper for a 1-0 advantage. Six minutes later, Levey doubled the lead when she gathered a loose ball just outside the box and laced a shot from 20 yards away for her first goal of the season.

Wooster sliced the Case advantage in half in the 39th minute with a goal from Lily Mohre assisted by Jessica Friesen, but the Spartans answered when sophomore midfielder/forward Caitlyn McGillis (Fraser, Mich./Regina) scored unassisted in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, both squads had goal-scoring opportunities but neither was able to find the back of the opposition's net.

For the contest, Case held a slight advantage in shots, 10-8, while the Fighting Scots held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

In goal, sophomore Cameron Casson (Allen, Texas/Allen) logged the first 45 minutes between the pipes to improve to 2-1 for the season, while freshman Megan Romelfanger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) played the final stanza with a pair of saves.

The Fighting Scots' Michele Ring made two stops in the loss.
