Spartan Men Fall to No. 18 Emory in Home Finale

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) scored 22 points, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team dropped its 2011-12 home finale to No. 18 nationally-ranked Emory University (Ga.) by a score of 105-71 in University Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (10-14, 2-11 UAA) will wrap up the season next Saturday, February 25 at rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m. Emory improves to 19-5 and 8-5 in the UAA.

Prior to the game, forward Tom Summers (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) was presented with the game ball from his 1,000th career point. The senior captain finished his final home game as a Spartan with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Emory led from start to finish, scoring the first 11 with Austin Claunch capping the run on a layup with 17:11 remaining in the first half. The Eagle lead quickly ballooned to 19, at 25-6, when Jake Davis hit a three-pointer at 13:17. The Spartans briefly trimmed the deficit to 11, at 29-18, when Summers hit a layup at 10:30, but Emory regained control and used the remainder of the period to build a 22-point advantage (55-33).

In the second half, Emory's lead never dipped below 22 as the visitors cruised past the 100-point plateau for the third time this season.

For the game, Emory held a 22-0 advantage in fast-break points and a 24-4 edge in point off of turnovers. Alex Greven and Jake Davis paced the Eagle attack with 26 and 21 points, respectively, while Claunch totaled 19 points and nine assists.
