Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Senior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) scored a season-high 29 points and added eight rebounds as the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team defeated Kalamazoo College, 82-53, on Sunday afternoon inside the Anderson Athletic Center.
The Spartans, who never trailed in the game, improve to 5-3 overall and will be idle until a Friday, December 21 home game with Hiram College at 6:00 p.m. The loss dropped the Hornets to 2-5 for the season.
Fowler's performance on Sunday follows a game where he totaled 25 points and 13 rebounds versus Allegheny College (Pa.) this past Wednesday. In addition, the Spartans got solid production off of the bench as junior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) and freshman point guard Jimmy Holman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Spartans scored the opening four points of the contest and built a pair of 10-point leads following the midway point of the opening half. A jumper from junior center David Thompson (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) made the score 17-7 at 8:10, while Fowler hit two free throws to increase the lead to 19-9 with 6:57 left in the period.
Case's lead reached a high of 11, 22-11, when Fowler hit a layup at the 5:25 mark, but Kalamazoo made things interesting with a 12-2 run that ended with back-to-back three-pointers from Mark Ghafari at 3:13 and 2:22. With the score at 24-23 in favor of Case, each side scored a field goal and a free throw, and the Spartans went into the break with a 28-26 advantage.
In the second half, the two sides played close until the Spartans opened up a 41-36 game with a 13-2 run that made the score 54-38 with 10:36 left as Chung accounted for the closing basket with a three-pointer.
The Hornets never recovered from there as Case cruised to the 29-point victory.
For the game, the Spartans were 19-of-21 from the free throw line. The nation's top team for blocks added eight to the season total, and sophomore guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist) led the way with a career-high five.
Ghafari led Kalamazoo with 24 points.
