Fowler Posts Double-Double, but Spartans Fall 84-76 versus Allegheny

Box Score

CLEVELAND – Senior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) recorded a double-double with game highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds, but the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered an 84-76 setback versus visiting Allegheny College (Pa.) on Wednesday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (4-3) will look to get back on track this Sunday, December 9 at Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 2:00 p.m. With the win, the Gators improve to 4-3.

Fowler's double-double was the 12th of his career. In addition, sophomore forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) contributed 15 points and five boards.

Allegheny scored the first four points of the game, but the Spartans came back with the next five and led 5-4 when Fowler followed his own miss with a tip-in at 16:13. Several lead changes and ties followed before the Spartans rattled off seven in a row to lead 20-12 as McLoughlin scored a fast-break layup at 11:49.

The Gators chipped away and tied the score at 21 with a 9-1 run that culminated in a Kyle Murphy three-pointer with 9:00 left in the first half, but the Spartans responded with a 6-0 spurt that ended in an "old-fashioned" three-point play by sophomore forward Brian Klements (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) at 7:26. Case maintained the lead from there and went into the halftime break with a 38-34 advantage.

In the second, the Gators kept it close and eventually utilized a 6-0 run to grab a 65-64 lead when Chris Milon completed a three-point play with 7:34 remaining. The run extended to 11-0 on a Devone McLeod jumper as Case went scoreless for 3:23 and trailed 70-64 with 5:25 left to play. The Gator lead grew to as many as eight, 73-65, following a Clark Tritto layup with 3:32 left on the clock, and the Spartans never came any closer than three the rest of the way as the visitors pulled away in the final minute.

Allegheny was led by McLeod and Ryan Stanko with 18 points apiece.

Following Sunday's game at Kalamazoo, the Spartans are idle for final exams and won't return to action until Friday, Dec. 21 versus Hiram College at 6:00 p.m.
