Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – Sophomore forward Erin Reynolds (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) scored a career-high 13 points, but Denison University utilized a quick 6-0 burst out of the halftime break en route to a 72-59 victory versus visiting Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2012 University Athletic Association/North Coast Athletic Conference Challenge inside Livingston Gymnasium.
The Spartans dip to 3-2 for the season and will continue the non-conference portion of their schedule with the third of a four-game roadtrip on Wednesday, November 28 at cross town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. With the victory, Denison improves to 4-1 overall.
Reynolds' career-high 13 points came on 6-of-10 shooting. Senior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and a team-best five assists, while classmate Erica Iafelice (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) also had 12 points and three boards. Off the bench, sophomore forward Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) chipped in with five points and a team-high six rebounds.
Denison landed three players in double figures led by Serafina Nuzzo with a game-high 23 points, four rebounds and four helpers, while Nicole Coggins finished with 13 points and six boards. Additionally, Gretchen Staubach wound up with 10 points and six rebounds.
In the opening stanza, Denison jumped out to a 15-4 lead with 13:11 left on a jumper from Nuzzo. The Big Red maintained the 11-point lead over the next few minutes but Case was able to cut the deficit to six points via a 9-4 run that made it 25-19 with 5:09 left when Reynolds scored a layup. Denison stretched the advantage back into double figures, but an Iacono jumper in the final seconds cut the hosts' lead to six at 31-25 headed into the intermission.
In the second half, the Big Red quickly increased their six-point halftime edge to 12 with a 6-0 spurt during the opening three minutes of play. Looking to chip away, Iaefelice nailed a long three at the 9:12 mark and Reynolds hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to cut the lead to seven at 52-45 with 8:00 showing on the clock. However, Denison came out of a timeout and Nuzzo hit a long three as Denison pulled away slowly for the win.
Following Wednesday's game versus the Blue Streaks in University Heights, the Spartans will have a 10-day break from games before taking on The College of Wooster on Saturday, December 8 at 4:00 p.m. inside Timken Gymnasium.
