Box Score CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University's men soccer team rallied with a score in the final minutes of the second half to tie the score at 2-2, but a tally early in the second overtime lifted University Athletic Association rival Washington University-St. Louis to a 3-2 victory on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon at Case Field.
With the loss, the Spartans conclude their 2012 home schedule and fall to 3-13-1 overall and 0-6 in the UAA, while the Bears improve to 10-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the Association.
In the early stages of the opening half, the Spartans got on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute from senior midfielder Ross Twanmoh (Fallston, Md./Fallston).
However, the Bears turned up their offensive pressure and tied the match at 41:27 on a goal from Jeremy Kirkwood with an assist by Zachary Query. The goal was Kirkwood's fourth of the fall. Then with just five second remaining in the period, Query tallied his first goal when he put home a rebound off of an initial Washington shot.
Refusing to go away, the Spartans knotted the match in the 83rd minute when senior midfielder Aaron Mayer (Merritt Island, Fla./ Merritt Island) punched in his second goal of the season via a double-assist from senior co-captain/midfielder Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman midfielder Chris Cvecko (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
Following a scoreless first overtime period, the Bears secured the UAA victory when Query recorded his second goal of the match just 1:26 into the second extra session.
Washington held a 14-11 advantage in shots, while both teams tallied four corner kicks.
Spartan senior goalkeeper Ryan Koepka (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township) posted a career-best eight saves in the setback, while Jonathon Jebson made six stops for the Bears.
Case completes the 2012 season on the road next Saturday, November 3 when it travels to the University of Rochester (N.Y.). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in western New York.
