Box Score CLEVELAND – A goal in the 78th minute was the difference as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team fell by a 1-0 count to University Athletic Association rival University of Chicago on a cold and rainy Friday night at Case Field. Prior to the match, CWRU honored its eight men's soccer senior student-athletes.
The Spartans fall to 3-12-1 overall and 0-5 in the UAA. The Maroons move to 8-3-4, 2-2-1 UAA.
Neither side generated a substantial scoring threat for most of the match, but each took turns controlling the pace. The visitors finally broke through at the 77:13 mark when Terrell White grabbed a loose ball in front of the net and tapped it past Spartan senior goalkeeper Ryan Koepka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) for the score.
The Spartans best shot at tying the match came several minutes later when sophomore forward Patrick O'Day (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) gained possession of a through ball but saw a tapper flutter just right of the Maroon goal at 80:58.
For the match, Chicago outshot Case Western Reserve, 12-7, and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Koepka posted four saves, while David Cohen picked up one in the final minute for the Maroons.
The Spartans wrap up the home portion of the 2012 schedule this Sunday, October 28 versus Washington University (Mo.) at 1:30 p.m. at Case Field. The season ends next Saturday, November 3 at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 7:30 p.m.
