Box Score PITTSBURGH – The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team concluded a brutal stretch in its schedule falling by a 4-0 score to host and No. 5 nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon University during University Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Field. The match wraps up a stretch of six-straight contests in which the Spartans squared off with a nationally-ranked foe.
Case slips to 3-10-1 overall and 0-4 in the UAA. The team stays on the road for its final non-conference match this season when it takes on Notre Dame College on Sunday, October 21. Kickoff at Brush High School is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
With the victory, the Tartans improve to 9-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the UAA.
In the opening half, Carnegie Mellon fired off the first 10 shots of the match eventually getting one past Spartan senior goalkeeper Ryan Koepka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) in the 38th minute on a goal from Ben Bryant on a helper from Ben Christensen.
Out of the intermission, Carnegie Mellon went ahead by a 2-0 score in the 59th minute after drawing a foul inside the 18-yard box. Max Tassano converted the ensuing penalty kick giving the hosts the two-goal edge.
The Tartans tacked on the third score in the 75th minute from Alex Abedian and the fourth goal for the match in the 88th minute from Daniel Kursman-Neri.
Between the pipes, Koepka slipped to 2-8-1 and finished with five saves, while CMU's Christopher Madden (9-2-1) tallied a pair of stops.
Statistically, Carnegie Mellon held a decided edge for the match in both shots (22-5) and corner kicks (10-1).
