Box Score ERIE, Pa. – All-American senior forward Vinny Bell (Parma Heights, Ohio/Valley Forge) scored the game-winner in the 107th minute as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earned a 1-0 double overtime victory versus Penn-State Behrend University on Tuesday evening at Family First Sports Park.
The Spartans, ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes Regional poll, improve to 6-1 and return to action this Saturday, September 24 at Heidelberg University at 2:00 p.m. in Tiffin, Ohio. PSU-Behrend falls to 2-4-1 overall.
The two sides played to a scoreless first half with the Spartans holding a slim, 5-4 advantage in shots. The second half was more of the same and Case held an 11-6 lead in shots after regulation.
After a scoreless 10 minutes in the first overtime, Bell ended the game at 106:51 with a header off a pass from senior midfielder Kyle Alsup (Avon, Ohio/Detroit Country Day, Mich.). Bell now has a University Athletic Association-leading nine goals and 21 points with five game-winners through seven matches. Alsup has two assists.
In goal, senior keeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) recorded three saves to improve to 6-1 with two shutouts.
Following Saturday's match at Heidelberg, the Spartans take on Ohio Wesleyan University at home on Wednesday, Sept. 28 in their final non-conference match before the start of University Athletic Association play.
