Spartan Baseball Team Splits Twinbill at Grove City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team split a doubleheader at Grove City College on Tuesday, March 22 at Behringer Field. The Spartans used a 10-run sixth inning to win the opener, 15-9, but dropped a pitcher's duel in the nightcap, 2-1.

With the split, the Spartans move to 14-7 overall. Grove City improved to 5-7.

In game one, Case jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of two-run innings. Senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) slugged his sixth homerun of the season to make the score 2-0 in the first. Junior outfielder Jackson Stone (Arlington, TX/Lamar) added an RBI double in the second, then came around to score on a single by junior outfielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente). Grove City took over for the next three innings, scoring three in the third, five in the fourth and one in the sixth. Five different Wolverines drove in runs, including Andrew Patterson and Kyle Wolff who each totaled a pair of RBI.

Trailing 9-4, Case then rallied with 10 runs in the top of the sixth. Senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) got the scoring started with an RBI single and later added a three-run double. Mullins also added a two-run double of his own as the Spartans totaled seven hits in the inning. For good measure, Case added one more run in the top of the seventh.

For the game, Bills was 2-for-3 with four runs batted-in, Mullins was 2-for-4 with four RBI, and sophomore designated hitter Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

In game two, Grove City needed just a pair of single runs in the first and fourth as starting pitcher Erick Locker hurled six innings without allowing an earned run. Junior Noah Lieberman (Evanston, IL/Evanston) was the tough-luck loser for Case, allowing just three hits and two runs in five innings with a season-high eight strikeouts.

At the plate, Mullins was 2-for-3 and drove in the lone Spartan run with a single in the sixth.

The Spartans are scheduled to return to action versus No. 2 nationally-ranked Heidelberg University on Saturday, March 26. First pitch of the doubleheader from Nobby's Ballpark is set for 12:00 p.m.
