Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) scored with just two minutes left in regulation propelling the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory versus University Athletic Association foe Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon at Case Field. The match marked the third-consecutive 1-0 win for the Spartans.
The Spartans, ranked fifth in the latest NSCAA Great Lakes Region poll, improve to 9-1-2 overall and 2-0 in the UAA. Case will return to action with the third game of its four-match homestand on Friday, October 14 versus UAA opponent Emory University (Ga.) at 7:30 p.m. With the loss, Brandeis dips to 5-7 and 0-2 in the UAA.
In the final minutes of regulation, Levey raced up the left side of the field after receiving a pass from senior defender Laura Gabster (Mount Laurel, N.J./Bishop Eustace). Levey dribbled toward the middle of the field and fired a shot from 10 yards away that hit the back of a Brandeis defender and deflected into the Judges' net. The goal was Levey's second of the season and eighth of her career, while the assist was Gabster's first helper of the season and second of her career.
In goal for the Spartans, senior Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) recorded seven saves for her seventh shutout of the season and 17th career. Francine Kofinas started the match, playing the opening 45 minutes and recorded one save, while Michelle Savuto played the final 45 minutes and collected four saves for Brandeis.
For the match, the Spartans outshot Brandeis, 14-8, and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Following Friday's match with Emory, the Spartans conclude the homestand with a match against rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) on Sunday, October 16 at 1:30 p.m.
